It’s constantly debated what region has the best barbecue, but Kansas City definitely is in the conversation. That makes it fitting that they will have the world’s first Museum of BBQ opening in Spring 2025.
Barbecue is a feast for your senses. Here in one of the BBQ capitals of the world, we’re creating a place where you can immerse yourself in the stories of barbecue.
Founder, Jonathan Bender
The museum will offer an immersive experience that takes you through the key elements of great barbecue – meat, rub/spice, wood, fire, smoke, and sauce. It’s a topic that museum founder Jonathan Bender and his business partner Alex Pope know about. Alex is a chef and restaurateur, while Jonathan’s accolades include judging the American Royal World Series of BBQ.
This is a place where barbecue comes alive. We want you to play and learn and come away with an appreciation for the joy and community that is part of barbecue culture.

Despite the museum being at the Crown Center Shops (2450 Grand Boulevard, Suite 231, Kansas City, Mo., 64108) in Kansas City, it doesn’t just focus on Kansas City style barbecue. After museumgoers make it through the elements of barbecue, they’ll travel through the main American regions of barbecue, including the Carolinas, Memphis, Texas, and Kansas City to learn the styles that make them unique.
After looking at all that barbecue history, attendees will no doubt want to try to make their own barbecue at home. The gift shop can help with a variety of rubs, sauces and other BBQ-themed goods.
For those that don’t have the time or patience for making their own barbecue, you’re covered too. Kansas City is home to more than 100 local barbecue restaurants.
