Camp Chef Discontinues Apex Hybrid Grill

Camp Chef released the Apex hybrid grill just two years ago and it already appears to be discontinued. It was an innovative grill that could be fueled off wood pellets or, with the flip of a switch, turn into a gas grill.

The Apex solved the common complaint with pellet grills that they aren’t good at searing. This gave easy built-in searing capabilities by effectively being two grills in one.

Evidence it’s Discontinued

You’ll notice that none of the menus on Camp Chef’s website point to the Apex. You can only find it through a direct link (this link will probably be broken soon) or through a search.

Also, when you get to the product page for any of the various Apex models, they all are listed as “unavailable”. In fact, if you go to the “discontinued” section of Camp Chef’s site where they have discounted products, there are a bunch of Apex accessories.

Why Would they Discontinue it?

We reached out to Camp Chef for more information about why the grill was discontinued, but haven’t heard back yet. This leads us to only be able to speculate.

We can think of a few reasons why it they might have gotten rid of it. The first is it might just not have been selling well.

There’s no sales figures for it that we’ve seen online, but it always seemed to be overshadowed by the Woodwind Pro. There didn’t appear to be much hype online for it, despite it being a creative idea.

It also might have been in an effort to reduce the number of pellet grill SKUs that Camp Chef has. Their parent company Revelyst (and ultimately Vista Outdoor), has been involved in a sale process, and has been undergoing a cost cutting plan.

As part of that they sold their cooking pellet manufacturer, Fiber Energy Products. This might be another example of cost cutting efforts.

Camp Chef has quite a few different pellet grill models. They have multiple Woodwind models, in addition they have the XT 24, Pursuit 20, and the DLX 24.

The Apex may have been a casualty of having more pellet grill offerings than made sense. It’s not the only pellet grill that they’ve discontinued, they also recently gotten rid of the SG 24.
