While grill sales had a pretty terrible 2022 compared to the year before, not every back patio product is doing poorly. Solo Stove has seen success with their Pi pizza oven and fire pits, while Ooni is actually expecting growth this year according to an article in The Times.
a bit of growth this year, which is great considering that our sector is in decline
Kristian Tapaninaho, Ooni Co-Founder
Any growth in 2022 is remarkable given the effects the pandemic and stimulus checks had on consumer spending. Ooni rocketed to 264% revenue growth in 2021 with about $255 million in revenue.
Pizza Oven Resale
Not only are they contending with tough comps for growth, they’re also seeing an emerging resale market for their pizza ovens. While that may present a headwind for new sales, it’s not something that Ooni is fighting either.
We’re actually looking at how to work with that. Growth at all costs is definitely not our goal and so we’re not panicking … we have a responsibility to think about the circularity of products
Darina Garland, Ooni Co-Founder
Welcoming a resale market for their products is aligned with their core values and makes sense with their partnership with 1% for the Planet. By joining 1% for the Planet, they’ve committed to donating 1% of their annual turnover to supporting social and environmental causes.
Growth Opportunities
What makes the growth opportunity different at Ooni compared to grill companies is, much like Solo Stove, their business isn’t cannibalized by the rampant grill sales in recent years. They offer a product that consumers will purchase in addition to grill, as opposed to as a replacement. This makes their saturation much less.
Ooni is also focusing on innovation, which helps drive sales. Recently, they’ve been introducing complimentary products to their pizza ovens, like frozen Dough Balls, and a foldable pizza oven table. They also are expanding their market to inside the home by launching a pizza steel for an oven and the new electric pizza oven called the Ooni Volt.
